I only read when my OCD kicks in

I enjoy reading, however, the bulk of reading only occurs while I am in an OCD focus zone. Last year I read over 70 books but I didn't pick up a book from August 2013 until March 25, 2014... I have already read 3 books this year!

Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse

Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse - John Joseph Adams, Cory Doctorow, George R.R. Martin, Carol Emshwiller, Jonathan Lethem, Octavia E. Butler, Stephen King, Gene Wolfe, Orson Scott Card, Paolo Bacigalupi Overall 4 star review

Interesting collection of End Of The World Literature Many of these stories are top notch, unfortunately there are a few that also serve as filler material.

The End of The Whole Mess
Stephen King

I give it 4 stars. Interesting enough but could have been better. Super genius figures out what is wrong with anger in people and finds a cure in a source of well water outside of Waco. Turns out that the cure also leads to Alsheimers but that is not discovered until too late.

Orson Scott Card

3 stars. Odd story of Deaver Teague being a salvage claimer in post apocalypse Utah. He typically drives around what remains of the country collecting salvage and selling it off. He is led into thinking that there is gold in a Mormon church that is mostly sunk under the water. He dives into the old church only to find cans with prayers carved into them.

The People of Sand and Slag
Paolo Bacigalupi

5 stars. Interesting and unique dystopian world and for me quite a comical story. They find a dog, they befriend the dog, and then they eat the dog.

Bread and Bombs
M. Rickert

2 stars. I didn't quite get it, but I can tell that if I did I still would not like this particular story. To me it reads as a mockery to religious unrest in the world.

How We Got In Town and Out Again
Johnathan Lethem

1 star. Falls flat and is pretty much sic fi porn as far as I am concerned. Probably dampens the whole because because the story was not only uninteresting but seemed to drag on 20 pages to long.

Dark, Dark Were The Tunnels
George R.R. Martin

3 stars. Reminds me of an H.G. Wells book. Not very original at all, but in Martin style well written.

Waiting for the Zephyr
Tobias S. Buckell

4 stars. Not an original concept but an exciting world that is built here. The only problem with this story is that it is to short to invest many emotions.

Never Despair
Jack McDevitt

4 stars. Interesting world and unique play on events.

When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth
Cory Doctorow

4 stars. For a short story this seemed a little to long. I was a sys admin so I got a kick out of this one. Doubt it would go down like that though since there would be substantial power issues. The internet would go first, however, everything else including the survivors I think is quite realistic.

The Last of the O-Forms
James Van Pelt

2 stars. Great concept of original species but the story simply does not deliver. So bad the biggest disappointment in this series of short stories.

Still Life with Apocalypse
Richard Kadrey

3 stars. Short and sweet although I didn't find it captivating.

Artie's Angels
Catherine Wells

1 star. Middle of book filler material. I am guessing that they are under license to release certain books, good or bad. If there are bad ones and everybody knows it they put it in the middle of the book and hope that people simply skim over it. I didn't.

Judgment Passed
Jerry Oltion

3 stars. Not a bad story but to me it came off as filler material or a work not quite refined.

Gene Wolfe

5 stars. I"m a sucker for "there is no one alive but us" type of stories and this is a good one. The story ended to soon, and gives me a touch of Gene Wolfe's style. Definitely keeping my eyes out for more works by him.

Nancy Kress

3 stars. It didn't quite hold my attention.

And the Deep Blue Sea
Elizabeth Bear

5 stars. I can just picture a motorcycle flying down major interstates with no other traffic. Ever. Exciting and entertaining little story.

Speech Sounds
Octavia E. Butler

4 stars put up your dukes and fight! Great little story!

Carol Emshwiller

4 stars. War in America? Not so futuristic. There are many wars in America, it just doesn't make the global news.

Ginny Sweethips' Flying Circus
Neal Barrett, Jr.

5 stars. I loved it with the intro. Meet Ginny Sweethips and her traveling roadshow of selling sex, tacos, and dangerous drugs.

The End of the World as We Know it
Dale Bailey

5 stars. I share a first name with this author. I also completely relate to this story. We all experience The End of the World as We Know it... at least twice in our lifetime. We all stand alone to face the rain. I love this line here. Shit happens. It's the end of the world after all. The dinosaurs never discovered what caused extinction, either."

A Song Before Sunset
David Gregg

5 stars. Hunting rats with a sledgehammer by a 65 year old man. Nothing describes the end of the world any better.

Episode Seven: Last Stand Against the Pack In the Kingdom of the Purple Flowers
John Langan

3 stars. Not as good as The End of the World as We know it, that is my opinion and I didn't particularly care for the author's writing voice. Kind of a lack luster end to the book.
